Iowa Agriculture Colleges

Farmers, ranchers and agriculture managers held over 1.2 million jobs in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While many farmers receive their training on the job, it's becoming more common for farmers and ranchers to complete an associate degree or a bachelor's degree at an agriculture orientated college. The state of Iowa offers both two-year and four-year colleges for students wishing to pursue an agriculture related education.
  1. Iowa State University

    • Iowa State University, located in the city of Ames, is home to more than 28,000 students and offers 100 majors, as of 2010. The college of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers numerous majors and programs relating to agriculture, including agriculture and life sciences exploration, agriculture biochemistry, agriculture business, agriculture and life sciences education, agriculture studies and agriculture systems technology. Iowa State University states its agriculture education program ranks fifth in the nation and its Ag Career Day is the largest of its kind in the nation.

    Ellsworth Community College

    • Part of the Iowa Valley Community College district, Ellsworth Community College is located in the riverside city of Iowa Falls. As of 2011, ECC has 1,100 students, with a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. The college offers an agriculture program, which provides students with an associate degree, most commonly used to transfer to a four-year institution. The program requires a total of 64 credits, with 42 credits consisting of general education and 22 credits being electives. The agriculture program at ECC is also offered at Iowa Valley's Marshalltown campus.

    Western Iowa Tech Community College

    • Western Iowa Tech Community College is located on a 200-acre site in Sioux City and was founded in 1966. The Agriculture program at WITCC offers an associate of applied science degree, associate of arts degree and a two-semester diploma. Examples of classes required for the applied science degree at the college include principles of agronomy, animal health, ag law, issues in agriculture and animal nutrition. WITCC also offers students the option to take agriculture classes online.

    Iowa Central Community College

    • Iowa Central Community College, located in Fort Dodge, was organized in 1966 and offers an agriculture transfer program, as well as an agriculture technology program. Iowa Central states that typically the first two years of the agriculture transfer program are taken on itscampus, while the final two years are taken at a four-year university. Students taking the agriculture technology program are able to receive an associate of applied sciences degree.
