Northern Iowa Colleges

Northern Iowa is home to a few universities as well as many small private and community colleges. Colleges in the area vary from state-supported schools to centers affiliated with major religious institutions, giving students in Northern Iowa a wide array of options to cater to their individual learning style and desired community. Types of degrees offered and departments of study vary depending on the size and affiliations of the college or university.
  1. University of Northern Iowa

    • The University of Northern Iowa is a state-supported university located near the Cedar Falls and Waterloo area in northeastern Iowa. The academic program is organized into six major colleges including the College of Business Administration; College of Education; College of Humanities and Fine Arts; College of Natural Sciences; and College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. All of these have various departments, majors and minors as well as special programs. The school offers events and exhibits in the arts, and has many facilities catering to fine arts like the Strayer-Wood Theater and the University of Northern Iowa Museum. Students who choose the on-campus package live in one of 10 residence halls with all expenses such as dining, utilities, cable and Internet covered.

    Luther College

    • Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts school located in Decorah, a small town in northeastern Iowa. As the college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, its mission is not only to provide education, but to instill in students a sense of faith, leadership and community service. There are more than 60 majors available, as well as pre-professional and certification programs which lead to Bachelor of Arts degrees. It also offers more than 120 activities, including athletics, honor societies, social organizations and the student activities council.

    Northwestern College

    • Northwestern College, located in Orange City, Iowa, is a Christian liberal arts college which is affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. The college states that its mission is to create an academic community which engages students to be courageous and to have faithful learning and living which will empower them to follow Christ and pursue God's work. Aside from offering majors in 23 different departments, Northwestern College also offers six career concentrations consisting of Christian theater ministries, computer science, neuroscience and persons, fitness management, sports management and criminal justice. Northwestern College offers multiple activities and events, including clubs, sports and organizations. There are also school bonding events like Medieval Week's Epic Battle and a Wild West Shoot-out.

    Upper Iowa University

    • Upper Iowa University is located in Fayette. Its mission is to provide student-centered undergraduate and graduate education while using flexible teaching systems, such as online and independent study, and to respect, encourage and nurture diversity. Instead of offering a traditional semester program, the school divides its calendar into six, eight-week terms where students are enrolled in two classes at a time. It also offer 17 different educational centers, including some on U.S. military bases as well as internationally in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. The university offers undergraduate degrees, Associate of Arts degrees, certification programs and master's degrees.
