Northern Michigan Colleges

Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are home to a variety of institutions of higher education, including one private university, several public universities and a community college. These institutions offer two-year and four-year degree programs that can prepare students for a wide variety of careers.
  1. Northern Michigan University

    • Northern Michigan University is a public university that was founded in 1899. As of 2009, the school had about 8,600 undergraduates and 680 graduate students. The university offers programs leading towards associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, certificates and diplomas within four colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Walker L. Cisler College of Business, the College of Graduate Studies and the College of Professional Studies. The university also offers pre-professional programs in architecture, engineering, law and medicine.

    Lake Superior State University

    • Lake Superior State University is a public university that was founded in 1946. The school's student body remains small, with fewer than 3,000 undergraduates and graduate students as of 2009. In addition to its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, the university also has campuses in Escanaba, Gaylord and Petoskey. The university offers degree programs within 12 schools divided into four colleges, including the College of Arts, Letters and Social Sciences, the College of Natural, Mathematical and Health Sciences, the College of Professional Studies and the College of Engineering, Technology and Economic Development. The school offers some specialized degree programs not found at many other Michigan universities, including programs in environmental health, parks and recreation, fish health and fisheries and wildlife management.

    Finlandia University

    • Finlandia University, a private university affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, was founded in 1896. The school remains the only private university in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Finlandia's students can work toward two-year associate degrees or four-year bachelor's degrees within the university's four colleges and schools, including the Suomi College of Arts and Sciences, the International School of Art and Design, the College of Health Sciences and the International School of Business. The university is located near Lake Superior's southern shore.

    Bay de Noc Community College

    • Bay de Noc Community College, commonly referred to simply as Bay College, is a public community college located on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The college offers associate degree programs and professional certificate programs in six primary divisions, including arts and letters, business, math and science, nursing, social and behavioral sciences and technology. The college also offers workforce training programs and online education programs. Many Bay de Noc Community College students transfer to four-year colleges and universities after completing two-year degree programs.
