Dental Hygienist Programs in Ohio

A dental hygienist is a licensed professional that assists a dentist in providing treatment to patients. Dental hygienists must effectively provide dentists with the help they need as well as educate patients on proper dental hygiene. As a result, graduation from a dental hygienist program at a higher learning institution is a mandatory requirement to enter the field. Typically in Ohio, completion of dental hygiene programs takes two years and a graduate earn an associate degree. However, there is one program in the state that offers a four year bachelor's degree dental hygiene program.
  1. The Ohio State University

    • The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the third largest dental school in the country. The college has eight different dental units, including the Dental Hygiene Division. Furthermore, the Dental Hygiene Division is the only program in the state of Ohio that offers a four-year degree for dental hygienists.

Within the program, there are two distinct tracks. The first track is called the Entry Level Dental Hygiene Program and is designed for undergraduate students with no prior training or degrees in the dental hygiene field. In order to qualify for this program students must earn a GPA of at least 2.5 for thirty credit hours (in specific courses relevant to program), have observed dental hygienists in private practice for at least twenty hours and have competitive SAT/ACT scores.

The second track is called the baccalaureate degree completion program and is intended for students who earned an associate degree or certificate in dental hygiene. The purpose of this program is to allow students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene instead of a two-year degree. The program normally takes two years of full-time to study to complete.

    Youngstown State University

    • Youngstown State University has a five semester Dental Hygienist Program that is available through The Biconte College of Health and Human Services. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. In addition, students are eligible to take their board examinations to obtain their licensing as a dental hygienist.

Since Youngstown State University strives to keep the faculty student ratio at certain levels, admission to the dental hygiene program is limited. In order to qualify for admission, applicants need to have observed dental hygienists in private practice for at least twenty hours and have a competitive ACT/SAT score and GPA.
