Northern Michigan University is one of the more well-known colleges in northern Michigan. It's located in Marquette---a city of about 20,000 in the state's Upper Peninsula. The school offers 180 different degree programs and serves about 9,400 students with 300 full-time faculty members. One of the unique aspects of Northern Michigan University is that each student receives a ThinkPad or an iBook as part of his tuition, making NMU a truly technologically savvy campus.
Lake Superior State University is a smaller university in northern Michigan, located in the Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie, just across the border from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. With 2,500 students and about 50 degree programs, Lake Superior State University is an intimate campus. The university is probably most well-known for its annual Banished Words List, which receives worldwide media coverage.
One of the most renowned universities in northern Michigan is Michigan Technological University, a well-known engineering school in the Upper Peninsula with more than 450 faculty members. This university is located on the Keweenaw Peninsula, an area that receives more than 200 inches of snow each winter. It has about 7,000 students studying its specialized programs, which include engineering, business, technology and forestry resources as well as several science programs.
One of the northernmost universities in Michigan's Lower Peninsula is Central Michigan University, located in the heart of the state in Mt. Pleasant. Just an hour from the Upper Peninsula, this university is well-known for its education and journalism programs. With more than 28,000 students and 200 degree programs, it's one of the largest universities in the state, but it boasts an intimate classroom size, with the ratio of students-to-faculty being 21-to-1.
