Northern Ohio Colleges

There are more than 150 colleges and universities in the state of Ohio, 14 of them public universities. While central Ohio can claim The Ohio State University and Ohio University, the northern part of the state boasts central excellent colleges, from big city universities, like Case Western Reserve University, to quiet rural schools, like Oberlin College.
  1. Bowling Green State University

    • Bowling Green State University (not to be confused with the Kentucky school with the same name) is located in Bowling Green, Ohio, about a 30 minute drive south of Toledo. The public university, founded in 1910 as a teacher's college, has an enrollment of more than 20,000 and now offers more than 200 degrees. Bowling Green is particularly known for its teaching program and business college.

    Oberlin College

    • Oberlin College, located in the small, north-central town of Oberlin, has an illustrious history. The four-year, private, liberal arts college was founded in 1833 and was, among other things, the first college in the US to offer bachelor's degrees to women. Oberlin also played an important role in the mid-19th century abolitionist movement. Today, the college has an enrollment of around 2,800 and is known for its music program (the oldest in the US).

    Case Western Reserve University

    • Located in Cleveland's University Circle cultural neighborhood (near the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Hall), private Case Western Reserve University was created in 1967 by merging Western Reserve University with the Case School of Applied Science. Today, the liberal arts college has an enrollment of around 9,800 undergraduate and graduate students and is consistently ranked by "US News and World Report" as one of the top universities in the United States.

    Kent State University

    • Like Bowling Green, Kent State was also begun as a teacher's college. Founded in 1910, the public university is located southeast of Cleveland in the small town of Kent. Today, Kent State has an enrollment of around 38,000. Although the school is perhaps best known for the tragedy where four students were killed by Ohio National Guardsmen on May 4, 1970, Kent offers 281 degree programs, including a noted school of fashion design.
