Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, is one school offering a Master of Social Work (MSW) in an online format. The school offers the degree in an accelerated format for students that have received their bachelor's degree in social work from a CSWE accredited institution. It is also open to students with bachelor's degrees in other fields as well, but not in an accelerated format. Courses offered through the online format are the same as those offered in a traditional setting. Florida State University likewise offers an online MSW degree that is CWSE accredited. The program is only open to students that have obtained their bachelor's degree from a CWSE accredited institution. The online program is 39 credit hours, 12 of which are through field instruction. MSW concentrations include clinical social work and social policy and administration. Areas of study within the program include psychopathology in clinical practice, crisis intervention, evaluation of social work practice, social policy and program evaluation, personnel administration in social services, advanced policy analysis and organizational and community systems.

The University of New England (UNE) also offers the CSWE accredited MSW online. Like the programs at Florida State and Texas State, the University of New England offers two different degree tracks, one in a more traditional format, and an advanced standing format that is an accelerated course for students already having a bachelor's degree in social work. The program emphasizes both research and practice in social work. The traditional track program is 64 credit hours, four of which are field practicum experiences. The advanced standing program is 66 credit hours, two of which include practicum experiences. Of the 66 credit hours, 37 must be taken at the UNE (up to 29 hours can be transferred from another institution). Areas of study include human behavior and social environment, social welfare policy and programs, program development and community practice and administration and supervision, among others.
