Capella University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The doctor of social work program at the university is offered through the Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The courses are designed to prepare students for work in leadership positions in social services, advocacy and social justice. The program combines theoretical training with practical experience and a strong emphasis on applied technology. The program runs for three years on a full time basis. Graduates from the program can apply their training by working in leadership positions at non-profit and governmental agencies or as faculty and researchers.

Canyon College is accredited by the American Council on Private School Accreditation (ACPSA). The online bachelor's degree in social work is comprised of seven core courses and three electives. Prospective students wishing to enroll in the master's program must choose an area of specialization such as mental health, family and children, gerontology or school social work. Students are required to complete 53 course credits with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The course credits are comprised of core courses, specialty courses and electives. In addition to taking online courses, students are required to complete their practical training by conducting fieldwork in their area of specialization.

The university has been consistently ranked as one of the best colleges in the north by U.S. News and World Report. The social work program at the University of New England is one of the few programs that has received recognition from the Council on Social Work Education. The program is open to students who have already completed their bachelor's degrees. Applicants who have bachelor's degrees in social work are eligible to begin the program by taking advanced courses towards their master's degrees.
