The Canadian Virtual University (CVU) is an association comprising of 12 of Canada's leading accredited universities that specialize in online and distance learning, and are chartered under provincial legislation to offer study programs from bachelor's degrees through to doctorate degrees. CVU's website allows you to quickly and easily access information pertaining to the universities, programs, schedules, curriculum and costs.
While there are plenty of choices of universities offering bachelor's and master's degrees, only two accredited universities offer doctorate degrees via online studies: Royal Roads University and Athabasca University. Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Royal Roads University offers a Doctor of Social Sciences (DSocSci) program, which is "Canada's first applied research doctorate designed exclusively for working professionals," according to the univeristy's website. The program begins in February each year. The cost for tuition for the program commencing in February 2012 is $74,900 for both Canadian and international students.
Based in St. Albert, Alberta, Athabasca University is Canada's Open University and is "dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to and success in university-level study and to increasing equality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide." It offers a Doctor of Education in Distance Education and a Doctorate in Business Administration degree. Programs begin in September each year, and courses commencing in September 2011 will cost $52,500 for both Canadian and international students.
Established in 1874 by an act of the Canadian Parliament, the Royal Military College of Canada, in Kingston, Ontario, provides "a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to thorough knowledge of the military profession." All 16 certificate, bachelor's and master's programs are available in English or French. Although the college prefers that students will already be in the Canadian Forces or go on to pursue officer careers in the Canadian Forces, any Canadian or international student already studying in Canada may apply for admission to study.
Licensed practical nurses wishing to further their careers in nursing can earn a Bachelor of Nursing at Athabasca University. Registered nurses can pursue post-registration degrees of a Bachelor of Nursing and a Master of Nursing at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario.
