In 2006, the Western Governor's University received NCATE accreditation for all of its teacher education programs, becoming the first completely on-line school. Graduates may apply directly to 49 U.S. states for certification (the state of Iowa was in negotiation with the school for approval as of May, 2010). The university offers 17 pre-licensure programs (nine bachelor's, four post-baccalaureate and four master's) and 13 master's programs for teachers who have already obtained a license. Pre-licensure courses include one term of in-classroom student teaching, full-time over 12 to 20 weeks. The "competency based" curriculum ensures graduates finish programs prepared for the classroom. Students have access to a free on-line library and low-priced book store. Due to $15 million in grant sponsorships from the Departments of Education and Labor, students receive tuition rates generally lower than on-line programs offered through other colleges.
