Vocational Correspondence Schools

A correspondence school is one that provides study primarily through print materials. Students complete coursework at an independent pace since communication with instructors takes place by mail and email. Correspondence schools offer certificate, diploma and degree-granting programs, some fully accredited by regional or occupational organizations, such the National League of Nursing (NLN).

    • U.S. Career Institute offers vocational study by correspondence in areas such as bookkeeping, legal transcription, day care, patient care technician, pharmacy technician, fitness training and graphic design. The school also awards associate degrees in marketing, social work, entrepreneurship, accounting, financial services and human resources. U.S. Career Institute participates in the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) program for military veterans, active duty and reserve personnel.     Penn Foster Career School

    • Penn Foster Career School provides 80 vocational programs deliverable through correspondence study. Students are awarded certificates of completion or diplomas in such courses as medical transcription, teacher aide, legal secretary, electrician, paralegal, freelance writer and personal trainer. Students have a choice of whether to complete coursework via print materials, online or both. All materials and equipment is included in the price of tuition. Financial aid is not available.

    Oak Brook College of Law and Policy

    • Oak Brook College of Law and Policy is a Christian institution offering two, 1-year legal assisting programs, plus a 4-year Juris Doctor (JD) entirely by correspondence study. The paralegal program awards a certificate and graduates are qualified to sit for the Certified Legal Assistant Examination. Students in the legal studies program complete the same course of study as paralegal students, but have the option of taking a course at a time. JD students are eligible to sit for the state bar examination in California.

    Excelsior College

    • Established as a distance learning institution in 1971, Excelsior College offers accredited certificate, associates, bachelors and even masters degrees. Students may choose to earn college credit via correspondence, examinations, portfolio assessment, or online courses. Certificates are awarded in such subjects as homeland security, end of life care, criminal profiling and investigative analysis. Degrees may be earned in business, applied sciences and technology, health science, criminal justice, liberal arts subjects and nursing. Masters degrees may be earned in business administration (MBA), nursing (MSN) and liberal studies. As reported by the National League for Nursing, Excelsior College has been distinguished as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education.
