Homeland Security University Programs

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for securing the United States from the many types of terrorist and safety threats that the nation faces every day. Universities offer homeland security programs at a variety of levels, including diploma, associates and master's degrees, to provide students with comprehensive information to begin a career in homeland security.

    • Keiser University offers an associate of arts degree program in homeland security. Within this program, students complete a comprehensive curriculum on the major components within homeland security. Required courses include an introduction to criminal justice, introduction to homeland security, organizing the war on terrorism and domestic and international terrorism.

    San Diego State University

    • San Diego State University offers a master's degree program in homeland security. This program is the first of its kind throughout the United States. This program focuses on comparative and international approaches and requires students to participate in long or short-term studying abroad. Students choose from eight specialization areas, which include border security and governance; communication and information systems; information security; infrastructure and homeland security; law, society and homeland security; project management; science and technology; and terrorism and irregular warfare.

    University of Maryland University College

    • The University of Maryland University College offers a masters of science degree in information technology with a specialization in homeland security management. The curriculum in this program was designed to prepare students to perform risk assessments for security as well as plan and manage operational recovery. Required core courses include information technology foundations and information technology project management. Specialization courses include concepts in homeland security and biosecurity and terrorism.

    University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

    • The Center for Homeland Security at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs offers an undergraduate certificate program in homeland security. This certificate program is offered only offered in its entirety on line. The curriculum consists of three courses that need to be completed in order to fulfill the program requirements: public administration and homeland security; understanding terrorism; and introduction to first responder organizations.
