Master's Degree Programs in Homeland Security

With the uncertainty of today's world and the ever increasing likelihood of terrorist attacks on the United States, it is important to develop leaders who can respond to potential security threats and lead efforts to deter them. Some colleges and universities are now offering degrees in homeland security to produce such leaders.
  1. Penn State University

    • One university leading the way to develop homeland security leaders is Pennsylvania State University (Penn State or PSU). Penn State offers courses in homeland security leading to a master's degree that can be obtained online through PSU's "World Campus." Penn State's Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security degree allows students to customize their degree program by specializing in one of five areas of study: homeland security, agricultural biosecurity, public health preparedness, geospatial intelligence, and information security and forensics. Core courses include: homeland security administration; violence, threats, terror and insurgency; and social and ethical issues in homeland security.

    San Diego State University

    • San Diego State University (SDSU) likewise offers a graduate degree program in the field of homeland security. The program offered at SDSU, however, is not an online program. Instead, it is an interdisciplinary program offered on the SDSU campus that results in a master's degree in the field. The program also requires study abroad as part of the curriculum. The degree is 36 credit hours, 12 of which come from core courses offered through four seminars: homeland security; science, technology and homeland security; emergency preparedness and response; and law, society and homeland security. Specializations include border security and governance; communication and information systems; information security; infrastructure and homeland security; law, society and homeland security; project management and terrorism; and irregular warfare.

    University of Connecticut

    • The University of Connecticut also offers a master's degree in professional studies through its Center for Continuing Studies. The program is offered in a blended format, allowing students to take a majority of the classes online while they take the remainder of the courses through a series of "immersion sessions" that last four weeks and require student attendance on campus. Areas of study covered by the program include homeland security strategy and policy development, managing organizational change, national security issues in terrorism, performance management and leadership, critical infrastructure protection, developing technologies in homeland security, and strategic intelligence.
