Joint Master's Degree Programs

Joint master's degree programs permit students to earn graduate degrees in two disciplines. They teach students skills in research and writing that can be used in further studies at the doctoral level or for entry into positions in teaching, research or government. Joint master's degree programs can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis; students need to apply to and be accepted by each program in which they wish to earn a degree. Several schools offer joint master's programs in a variety of fields.
  1. Cornell University

    • Students who want to pursue careers in landscape design and planning can complete joint master's degrees in landscape architecture and city and regional planning at Cornell University. The degree can be completed in a little more than three years, and prospective students must be accepted by both the architecture and planning programs.

Landscape architecture course work covers topics such as site engineering and plant selection; city planning courses teach principles of planning analysis and spatial development. Study abroad opportunities are available in Brazil, Panama and Italy. Graduates of the joint degree program move on to careers as community developers and environmental analysts.

    Brandeis University

    • The joint master's degree program in anthropology and women's and gender studies at Brandeis University is research-focused and teaches skills in critical thinking and writing. Brandeis' anthropology department is strong in several research areas, including economic anthropology, religion and ritual and women's studies. Both degrees can be finished in one year on a full-time basis; part-time students typically take up to two years to complete the degrees.

Students are required to submit a thesis paper and attend five graduate seminars. Required classes in women's and gender studies, anthropology and research methods round out the joint degree program. Brandeis' website notes that completing a joint master's degree can give a student a competitive advantage when applying to Ph.D. programs; graduates who choose not to pursue doctoral study can find careers as teachers and researchers.

    Yale University

    • Yale University's website notes that completing a joint master's degree program as a physician's assistant and public health professional (PA/MPH) prepares graduates to work in clinical settings as physician assistants (PA) and in health policy. Students apply to the physician assistant program and school of public health; the program typically can be completed in 39 months.

There are four concentration areas in public health, and students choose to specialize in either epidemiology, chronic disease, health policy or social and behavioral science. Joint degree candidates cannot transfer from other institutions; they must complete both degrees in their entirety at Yale.
