Type the title of your lab report and center it on the first page. Below the title, type your full name. Below your name, type the date.
Type the heading "Introduction" on the second page of your lab report. Explain why you performed the experiment: what were you trying to observe? What scientific principles were you investigating? Were you trying to duplicate the results of a previous experiment? Outline the equations and mathematical formulas you used for the experiment in the introduction. Describe any scientific theories relevant to your experiment. Then state your hypothesis---the outcome that you predicted for your experiment. Justify your hypothesis.
Type the heading "Materials and Methods." Write a logical, step-by-step description of how you carried out the experiment and what materials you used. Remember, the purpose of this portion of the lab report is to allow other researchers to attempt to re-create your results, so it needs to be clear and concise.
Type the heading "Data." Data collection is crucial to properly conducting chemistry experiments. Data should be presented in a table or tables. Clearly label the table according to its contents, and number your tables if you include more than one.
Type the heading "Calculations." Chemistry experiments rely heavily on mathematical formulas and often focus on chemical reactions that can be expressed as a formula. In this section of your lab report, you'll complete your calculations and show all of your work. Don't forget the units for your numerical figures. Include a percent error calculation.
Include your graphs in this section. Each graph should take up its own full page. Title each graph and label its axes.
Write the heading "Discussion." Explain how you interpret and analyze the results of your experiment. Compare your actual results with what was theoretically expected and attempt to explain any discrepancies.
List any works you referenced for the experiment. Format your works cited list according to your professor's instructions in your class syllabus.
