How to Write a Lab Report for Physics

Physics aims to answer questions about natural occurrences and often involves hands-on experimentation. Although conducting an experiment is extremely important, reporting the experiment may be just as important. If you fail to document all facets of the experiment, your results may not be considered valid or reliable. Lab reports for physics experiments often contain major sections that are common across universities.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the report with an abstract. Title the section "Abstract" and include three major items: What you did, how you did it and the results you obtained. Keep this section very brief, including a sentence or two for each item.

    • 2

Create a section called "Purpose and Theory." This is the background section of the report. Include information about the theoretical basis of the experiment and how the experiment addresses a gap or extends the theory. Include important equations when presenting the theory.

    • 3

Include a section entitled "Procedure and Apparatus." The procedure clearly outlines each step you took to complete the experiment. It is much like a set of directions. The apparatus describes the equipment you used to collect data, which includes type and model number. Include pictures of the apparatuses.

    • 4

Continue with a section called "Data." This includes all raw data you collected in the lab. Photocopy and insert the actual data collection sheets used in the lab. Add these sheets to the appendix of your lab report. In addition to raw data, present organized data in graphs and charts.

    • 5

Write a section called "Calculations." This is a description of the calculations and equations used to obtain your final results.

    • 6

Conclude the report with a section called "Results and Conclusions." Summarize the conclusions in tables and graphs. Then summarize the results briefly. Relate the results back to the original theory. Conclude with any implications on the theory you were testing.
