How to Write an Objective Statement for a Science Lab

Objectives of a science lab experiment are expressed in sentences that explicitly state what the experiment has been designed to accomplish. These statements are included in laboratory manuals to help the researcher understand the purpose of the activity and help guide their actions. Statements must address what the researcher will do, how they will do it and how the outcome of the objectives will be measured. Although only a few objective statements are required for lab manuals, they can be daunting to write. Following a few general steps can help simplify the writing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a bulleted list of what the researcher will do during the experiment.

    • 2

Make a bulleted list of how the researcher will carry out each of the things that you included in your list from Step 1.

    • 3

Make a list of possible ways to measure the outcomes of the experiment.

    • 4

Form sentences that include one of the bulleted points from each of your three lists. Using this method will ensure that you cover each of the three components that must be included in your objective statements. Write several variations of objective statements and then choose the best two or three to include in your science lab write-up.
