How to Write a Title Page for a Lab Report

Students frequently write lab reports to present data and findings, and to communicate the significance of those facts. The University of Arizona reports a well-written lab report provides more than just data; it also gives proof the author understood the concepts behind the facts presented. They show why and how difference in data occurred as it reflects the understanding of scientific principles. The beginning of every lab report contains a title page that quickly helps a reader know who wrote the report, who participated in the study and the report's topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a word-processing program on your computer.

    • 2

In a new document, center the cursor at the top of the document's page. Type the report's title on the first line. Psych Web suggests the title of the lab report should be a short statement of no more than 50 characters that tells about the main topic presented. It should also identify the main variables of the report, along with the topic investigated. Use only capital letters when writing the title. An example title may be, "THE EFFECTS OF SUGAR IN GERBILS."

    • 3

Type your name and the names of your lab partners immediately under the title, centered on the page. The name of the report's author or the person that did the most work should have her name listed first. Under the first name, the name of the lab partner follows.

    • 4

Move the cursor down a couple of lines on the document and type the date the lab report is due.

    • 5

Move the cursor down a couple more lines on the document and type the name of the course. On the line immediately following, type the name of the professor, and type the course number under his name.

    • 6

If required, add the abstract to the end of the title page. Align the text to the left side of the document. The abstract should list the reason for doing the experiment, the findings, reasons why the experiment was significant and a main conclusion. Abstracts should only contain one paragraph of no more than 100 words, and may include information about a method or theory used or examined.
