How Do I Write a Resource Page for an Essay?

Essays and papers that cite sources outside the author's own knowledge must include a list of resources or references. There are two styles commonly used for high school and college papers: MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association). According to Purdue University's online writing lab, liberal arts and humanities majors, along with high school students, most often use MLA, while those studying the social sciences most often use APA. Ask your teacher which style you should use.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin a new page. Use one-inch margins and carry over any headers used in the rest of the essay. Title the page appropriately. Appropriate titles include Resources, References, Sources and Works Cited.

    • 2

List all books, periodicals and other reference materials you used to research your essay. Alphabetize resources by the last name of the author. If there is more than one author, use the last name of the first author listed.

    • 3

Double-space each resource entry. Align the first line of each entry with the left-hand margin. Indent all subsequent lines of each entry. If you are using APA, indent lines half an inch. If you are using MLA, indent lines five spaces.

    • 4

Format the author name for each entry by typing the author's last name, a comma, the author's first name and a period. If your resource has more than one author, list them in the order in which they appear in the publication. Use an ampersand between the author names if there are two. For example: Mittelmark, Howard & Newman, Sandra.

    • 5

Format the resource name for each entry. For books, type the title of the book in italics, followed by a period. For periodicals, such as magazines and newspapers, type the title of the article followed by a period, and then type the title of the publication in italics. If you are using MLA, place quotation marks around the article title.

    • 6

Type the publication details for each book. For APA, insert the year in which the book was published before the title of the book and enclose it in parentheses and follow with a period. After the title, list the city and state in which the book was published, type a colon and then list the name of the publisher and a period. For example: Mittelmark, Howard & Newman, Sandra. (2008). How Not to Write a Novel. New York, New York: Harper Collins.

For MLA, after the title, list the city and state in which the book was published, type a colon, list the name of the publisher, type a comma, then type the publication year and a period. Finish by typing the medium of publication and a period. For example: Mittelmark, Howard & Newman, Sandra. How Not to Write a Novel. New York, New York: Harper Collins, 2008. Print.

    • 7

Type the publication details for each periodical. For APA, insert the date before the article title, formatted as year, month, day. After the title of the magazine, type the issue number of the magazine in italics, type a comma, then type the pages on which the article appears and a period.

For MLA, type the day, month and year of the issue after the title. Do not use commas. Type a colon, then type the pages on which the article appears and a period. Type the media of publication and a period.
