How to Write a Title Page for an Expository Essay

When writing a title page for an expository essay, refer to the style guide specified in your assignment. The most common style guides used for essays are the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Modern Language Association (MLA) styles. APA style, according to Purdue University's Online Writing Lab, is commonly used in the social sciences, while MLA is more common "within the liberal arts and humanities."

Instructions

  1. APA Style Title Page

    • 1

Set your margins at 1 inch on all sides, choose double-spacing and set your font to 10 or 12 point Times New Roman.

    • 2

Set a header to print on each page of the document. When creating your page header, set the page numbers to display flush right and the title of your paper to display in all caps flush left. On your title page only, your header should include "Running Head" followed by a colon, a space and your title in all caps, as in the following example provided by Purdue's Online Writing Lab:

Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER

    • 3

Center your title in the upper half of the page, this time in upper and lower case letters. APA style recommends that your title does not exceed 12 words and that you avoid abbreviations, according to Purdue's Online Writing Lab.

    • 4

Type your name, centered, two spaces below your title. Include your first name, middle initial and last name, but do not include titles or degrees, according to Purdue's Online Writing Lab. Follow with your institutional affiliation, centered, two spaces below your name.

    MLA Style Title Page

    • 5

Set your margins to 1 inch on all sides and your font to 12 point Times New Roman.

    • 6

Press enter 20 times and type your title, centered, using standard capitalization. Even though MLA style does not call for a title page, your assignment might require that you have one. Your title page is not numbered and is not counted in the total page count of your paper. Your first page of text, the one following your title page, is considered to be Page 1 of your essay.

    • 7

Type "by" two spaces below your title, then double-space again and type your first name, middle initial and last name.

    • 8

Press return 12 times and type your course name and number, such as English 4150. Type your professor's name two spaces below your course name. Double-space again and type the date.
