How to Make a Title Page for an APA Format Expository Essay

In college, you may find that certain professors will ask you to format term papers and essays according to a specific set of guidelines. One common set of guidelines, used most often in the social sciences, is issued by the American Psychological Association (APA). The Sixth Edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association sets out very specific guidelines for creating a proper APA title page.

Instructions

    • 1

List your essay title as a running head at the top of your paper. This running head should appear in all capital letters. On your title page, the words "Running head" should precede the title of your essay. For example:

Running head: CHINA AND THE ANCIENT IMPULSE

Your running head should be aligned left.

    • 2

List the title of your essay once more, within the upper third of your paper. All words should begin with a capital letter, except for articles. For example:

      China and the Ancient Impulse

      This should be centered.

According to APA guidelines, your title should contain no more than 12 words and should take up no more than two lines.

    • 3

List the author's name directly underneath the title. Use your first name, middle initial, and last name. For example:

      John C. Smith

Do not use titles such as Mrs., Mr., or Dr.

      Your name also be centered.

    • 4

List the name of the university or school you are attending on the line after the author. For example:

      Harvard University

The name of the institution should also be centered.

    • 5

Make sure that your title page is double-spaced. APA format calls for all parts of a paper to be double-spaced.
