How to Cite a CD-ROM Encyclopedia Source

There are two different ways to cite references in university papers or academic journals: MLA and APA. According to the University of California, MLA stands for Modern Language Association and the MLA format is the most common in humanities papers. The humanities includes English, philosophy and history. APA stands for American Psychological Association and is more common in the social sciences, such as anthropology, psychology and linguistics, according to Purdue University.

Instructions

  1. MLA Format

    • 1

      Type the name of the encyclopedia article in quotes, such as "Title." Be sure to include the period and the quotation marks.

      Type the encyclopedia's name in italics with a period at the end.

      Type "CD-ROM." Be sure to include the period but exclude the quotation marks. Include the version of the CD-ROM if there is more than one and follow that with a period as well, as in Ver. 2.0.

      Include the CD-ROM's publisher and the place and date of the publication, such as Place: Publisher, date. Be sure to include all of the punctuation.

    APA Format

      Type the author and title of the encyclopedia article, such as Author or Editor (Year). Title (Edition). Be sure to put the title in italics and include the year and edition if you have the information.

      Type [CD-ROM].(Year Published). Include the brackets and the period. Include the name of the CD-ROM's producer, if applicable.

      Type "Available: Encyclopedia Name [Access Date]." Include the date that you accessed the information from the CD-ROM encyclopedia.
