How to Cite Web Definitions

Proper citation format is required for any type of outside source material used within a body of text. Sources derived from the web, such as the definitions of words, require a format that slightly differs from print sources. Be sure to follow the correct format to properly cite web definitions, as style and formatting guidelines vary slightly depending on the field you are working in.

Instructions

  1. Cite a Web Definition

    • 1

Cite a web definition by using important information about the source. American Psychological Association (APA) style recommends using the defined word, year of publication, name of the source and the URL. For example, you would cite the definition of "graffiti" as "Graffiti." (2008). In Public Dictionary. Retrieved from www.publicxdictionary.com

    • 2

Place the year of publication in parentheses with a period placed both before and after it. Italicize the name of the source. Also, include the words "in" and "retrieved from" to accurately identify a source and how it can be retrieved again.

    • 3

Format an in-text citation for a web definition by using an abbreviated title of the source. Place the shortened title and the year of publication within parentheses, with a comma separating the two.
