How to Cite a Government Title

There is a specialized format to cite governmental organizations as a source in a bibliography. This applies to documents that are collaboratively written by and attributed to a governmental institution. For example, to cite a law enacted by the United States Congress, you would treat Congress as the author and include numerous details to indicate the source as the United States Congress, as opposed to a single author. In contrast, if the document has a single author who holds a government title or position, the source is cited in the same manner that you normally use to cite authors and their work.

    • 1

List the entire title of the governmental organization at the start of your citation. This includes the governmental name followed by the complete title of the organization. Separate each specific title with a period. For example, a citation for a source attributed to the United States Senate would begin as, "United States. Congress. Senate."

Include the title of the specific office or segment within the larger governmental organization, followed by a period. For example, "The Committee of Commerce," which is a smaller department within the United States Senate. Some documents may only be attributed to the larger governmental organization, which prohibits a more specific citation. To ensure a thorough citation, include a hierarchal list of every government organization or office to which the document is attributed. Separate each specific title with a period.

    • 3

Follow the title of the organization with the publication year of the document. Follow the publication year with a period. Place parentheses around both the year and the period. Follow the year of publication with the full title of the document or study, in italic letters.

    • 4

Include the name of the governmental institution from which you accessed the source, if applicable. For example, if you accessed the document through the Government Printing Office, cite this title and follow it with a period. Also include Superintendent of Documents call number given to the physical source. Alternatively, if you accessed the document on the Internet, include the date that you accessed the information as well as the web address of the source.
