How to Do an AP Biology Lab Report

Advanced Placement (AP) Biology lab reports are designed to give you an introduction to college laboratory reports, and to teach you how to explain scientific concepts and data clearly, concisely and in an organized form. Although teachers' expectations will vary somewhat across AP Biology courses, most will want the laboratory write-up to be in a standard form and to fulfill certain quality expectations. Your teacher can provide more specific guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Come up with a title that describes, as succinctly and completely as possible, the topic that you dealt with during experimentation, and what was being observed.

    • 2

Create an introduction that encompasses the background information, lab purpose and lab hypothesis. Your background information should have enough depth, and be written with enough clarity, that an intelligent person without a lab subject background would be able to grasp the information and purpose of the experiment. The hypothesis, which must be testable, should use an "if-then" statement and should be as specific to the experiment as possible. For instance, instead of writing, "Fruit flies, given the choice, will gravitate towards a moister environment," you would write, "If given a choice chamber, then fruit flies will be found on the moist side of the chamber at any given time interval."

    • 3

Provide, in the Materials and Methods section, a complete listing of the materials that you used in the experiment. As well, present the exact steps that you followed.

    • 4

Present, in the results section, a brief summary of your experimental results, in graphical/tabular form.

    • 5

Discuss the meaning of your results and whether they seem to prove or disprove your hypothesis. Draw a conclusion as to what you learned from your experiment. Include a discussion about potential sources of error and future directions of your experiment.

    • 6

Cite all sources from which you drew information when compiling your lab report, in your "Literature Citations" section. Always cite your lab manual, and cite any additional sources that you used to write your background section or draw conclusions about your data. Ask your teacher for specific directives as to citation formatting.
