Computer security consultants are responsible for protecting computer and network systems against viruses, spyware and hackers. This career was voted number eight in the top 50 of the best jobs in America in 2009, according to CNN Money. These universities offer programs that prepare students to enter into the field of computer security.
  1. Stanford University

    • Stanford University offers an advanced-level certificate program in computer security that teaches students how to protect networks, prevent attacks and secure electronic assets. The certificate is offered in an online format and requires the completion of six courses for the entire program. These courses include three required courses and three electives; the required courses include using cryptography correctly, writing secure code and security protocols. Students choose three electives from choices that include emerging threats and defenses, securing web applications, computer security management and web security 2.0.

    Dakota State University

    • Dakota State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree program in computer and network security. This program teaches students about computer security attacks and how to defend against them, social engineering and fraggle attacks. These students learn to hack so that they are familiar with the process and know how to build networks that are resistant to these attacks. Required courses include operating environments, web application programming, information security fundamentals and computer forensics fundamentals.

    James Madison University

    • James Madison University offers a Master of Science degree program in information security that is designed to be completed online in its entirety. In addition to earning a master's degree, students also earn two certificates upon completion of the program: information systems security officers and information systems security professionals; both are approved by the National Security Agency. Required courses include computer forensics, advanced network security, secure software engineering and secure operations.

    Purdue University

    • Purdue University offers a doctoral program in information security. This program provides students with an in-depth understanding of information security while simultaneously preparing the student in other disciplines combined. Students are expected to complete the academic study portion of this program in two years, followed by research ranging from six months to five years. Required courses include information security, organizational impact of information technology, cryptography and advanced information assurance.
