The University of Washington, commonly referred to as UW or "U-Dub," is a public research university that was founded in 1861. It now functions as the flagship institution of the University of Washington system. Graduate students at the University of Washington can pursue Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees within more than ten different colleges and schools, including the College of Built Environments, the Foster School of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of the Environment, the Information School, the School of Pharmacy, the Evans School of Public Affairs, the School of Public Health, the School of Social Work and the Graduate School.
