At Kansas State University, students in the Ph.D. program must have a master's degree prior to completion of the first semester of doctoral study. The Ph.D. program for geography at Portland State University is offered in conjunction with the Environmental Science and Management Program. This program combines several disciplines: biology, chemistry, civil engineering, economics, geography, geology and physics. Students with bachelor's degrees in areas other than geography are allowed to apply, but they must complete specific courses in geography before admission or before the end of the first year.

The Ohio State University offers four areas of specialization for geography doctoral candidates: urban, regional and global Systems; GIS and spatial analysis; environment and society; and atmospheric and climatic studies. Students can choose from several areas of emphasis, including GIScience, human geography, historical-cultural geography and environmental studies.
