The University of California in Riverside has a payroll program that leads to a payroll administration professional achievement award upon completion. This program can be completed in as little as six to nine months, but must be completed in no more than five years. Students must complete both the fundamentals course and the advanced course in order to receive the award. California State University at East Bay has a payroll practice and management certificate program that is designed to prepare newcomers in the payroll profession with necessary training, as well as to provide current payroll professionals with an opportunity to update their payroll knowledge. The curriculum consists of four modules which include taxation and compensation, wage and hour law, payroll management and year-end reporting and fringe benefits, and compensation and taxation. Chapman University has an online payroll program that is designed for students who are beginners as well as for those who are more advanced and need to sharpen their skills. After completion of this certificate program, students earn four units of continuing education credit. Courses take approximately eight hours each to complete and include federal wage and hour law, state wage and hour law, fringe benefits, compensation and taxation, payroll management, and year-end reporting and taxation and compensation.

Students choose to pursue the mastery course or the fundamentals course and must have internet access for both courses.
