The University of Massachusetts at Amherst offers a Ph.D. program with a concentration in hospitality and tourism management. Students are required to participate in a full-time residency and are expected to complete the program throughout the course of four years. During a portion of the program, students serve as research assistants while in other semesters, students serve as teaching assistants. Courses include foundations of organizational behavior and theory, seminar in tourism theory and research and research in organizations.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, otherwise known as Virginia Tech, offers students the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in hospitality and tourism management. In addition to the completion of hospitality and tourism management courses, students must also take courses from another departments, such as business, finance or management. Students are also required to complete a research project; the topics are dependent upon the students' work experience, interests and course of study.

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) at Temple University offers students the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. degree in business administration; this degree has a concentration area in tourism and sport. The STHM works with the Fox School of Business and Management to offer this program to students. Students complete the business administration coursework with the business school and complete the core classes with STHM. Courses include research seminar in tourism and sport, seminar in culture and communication, seminar in theory development: tourism and sport concepts and special topics in tourism and sport.
