Counseling Programs in the State of Washington

Counselors work in a variety of settings such as schools, clinics, hospitals or offices in private practices. In order to become a counselor, the minimum level of education required is a master's degree. Counseling programs at Washington institutions provide students with the education and clinical experiences to develop careers in the field.
  1. Washington State University

    • Washington State University has four counseling program options: a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), two master's degree options and a certificate option for those who already possess a master's degree. The Ph.D. option is in counseling psychology; the Master of Arts or Master of Education option is in school and community counseling; and the certificate program is in school counselor certification.

    Central Washington University

    • Central Washington University offers two counseling program options; one leads to a Master of Science in mental health counseling, while the other leads to a Master of Education degree in school counseling. Students also have the option of pursuing both programs and earning a Master of Science in mental health counseling with a certification in school counseling. Eight students are usually accepted each year to the mental health program, while four students are usually accepted to the school counseling program.

    Antioch University

    • Antioch University offers a program in psychology that leads to the completion of a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in mental health counseling. Aside from basic skills in counseling, the program also focuses on social responsibility, ethical practice and multicultural counseling. Within this program, students may further concentrate their studies in art therapy or drama therapy. Required courses include family of origin systems, communication and counseling skills, group counseling and psychodiagnostics and treatment planning.

    Pacific Lutheran University

    • Pacific Lutheran University offers a marriage and family therapy program that leads to a Master of Arts degree. This program is designed to train students to become therapists who have multiculturally informed and systemic perspectives when dealing with family, mental health and couple's problems. After students have successful completed at least two semesters within the program, they may begin the clinical experiences. Required courses include systems approach to marriage and family, human development, comparative marriage, and family therapy and development.
