Guidance Counselor Degree Programs

Guidance counselors, also referred to as school counselors, are responsible for helping students achieve academic goals by assisting with coursework and developing the abilities and skills necessary to prepare for continuing education. Guidance counselors are also responsible for performing administrative tasks. These degree programs provide students with the education needed to begin a career as a guidance counselor.

    • The University of Louisville offers a Master of Education program in school counseling and guidance. Students who enroll in this program prepare for public and private school settings at an entry level. After students complete the course requirements and the internship, they receive certification in counseling. Required courses include evaluation and measurement in education; human development; multicultural and diversity issues; career development and counseling; and introduction to research methods and statistics.

    American Public University

    • American Public University offers a Master of Education program in guidance and counseling that prepares students to work in school settings from kindergarten to high school. In addition to the internship and practicum requirements, students complete 12 courses to obtain the degree. Required courses include human growth and development, theories of counseling, professional orientation and ethical practice, helping relationships, career counseling, and development and research methods in education.

    University of Florida

    • The University of Florida offers a master's degree program in school counseling and guidance that prepares students for state certificate as a school counselor. Students also have the option of earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) that requires 90 educational credits beyond the entry level. Required courses include an introduction to counseling; counseling theories and applications; developmental counseling over the lifespan; and organization and administration of guidance and personnel programs.

    University of Hawaii at Manoa

    • The University of Hawaii at Manoa offers students a graduate-level degree program that leads to a Master of Education in counseling and guidance. This degree program is designed to be completed over the course of two and a half years on a continuous, full-time basis. Students choose from three options: a comprehensive examination, a thesis or the non-thesis option. Required courses include guidance and classroom management; ethnic groups and education in Hawaii; educational workshop in guidance; counseling in the schools; career development and vocational counseling; and human growth and development over the lifespan.
