What Equipment Is Needed for a Tissue Culture?

Tissue culture defines the growing or culturing of animal or plant tissue fragments in an artificial or "in vitro" environment. Because living cells can be adversely affected by contamination and changes in atmospheric composition or pH, such cells require the use of specialist equipment for tissue culture.
  1. Laminar Flow Hood

    • A laminar flow hood includes a filter to remove particulate matter from the atmosphere in which tissue culture is being prepared, plus a short wave ultraviolet (UV) that can be switched on to sterilize the surfaces of the hood.

    Glassware and Vessels

    • Glassware is required for heating and dissolving the media--the mixture of nutrients, vitamins and a solidifying or gelling agent--on which tissue culture is prepared. The vessels for the tissue culture itself must be sterile, biologically inert and optically transparent; disposable polystyrene vessels, known as petri dishes.

    Other Equipment

    • Other equipment required for tissue culture includes a scientific balance, for weighing nutrients, a pH meter, instruments--such as forceps, scalpels and spatulas--for transferring tissue culture and a refrigerator for storing chemicals.
