A laminar flow hood includes a filter to remove particulate matter from the atmosphere in which tissue culture is being prepared, plus a short wave ultraviolet (UV) that can be switched on to sterilize the surfaces of the hood.
Glassware is required for heating and dissolving the media--the mixture of nutrients, vitamins and a solidifying or gelling agent--on which tissue culture is prepared. The vessels for the tissue culture itself must be sterile, biologically inert and optically transparent; disposable polystyrene vessels, known as petri dishes.
Other equipment required for tissue culture includes a scientific balance, for weighing nutrients, a pH meter, instruments--such as forceps, scalpels and spatulas--for transferring tissue culture and a refrigerator for storing chemicals.
