University of Maryland, University College campus, offers a major in homeland security leading to a Bachelor of Sciences degree at completion. The degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including 30 within the homeland security major. A homeland security minor is also available. The degree includes such areas of study as strategic planning, problems in infrastructure security, cyber crime and international security. Internships in the field are also offered to students for credit. UMUC has been acknowledged by the Department of Homeland Security as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.
Herzing University has eight locations throughout the U.S., five of which offer programs in homeland security and criminal justice. Their offerings vary, including bachelor's degrees in homeland security/public safety and criminal justice with available concentrations in those same fields, to be paired with the opposite degree, as well as in emergency medical technology. Each program requires a minimum of 125 credits to earn the Bachelor of Science degree. Herzing University provides flexible course scheduling options, which allow students to graduate within three years through a combination of in-person and online courses.
At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, students studying homeland security must choose between the standard track of study, declaring either terrorism studies or emergency management as their area of concentration within the degree, or the technical track in cyber security. A Bachelor of Science in homeland security is awarded at the culmination of either track. Embry-Riddle has partnered for internships in the past with such organizations as the Department of Homeland Security, the Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to offer the best real-world experiences to their students. Besides the required internship, students must also complete a capstone homeland security project for a real-life client.
A Bachelor of Science degree in homeland security is offered at Central Penn College in Summerdale, Pa. A real-world internship is required as a culminating degree experience, engaging students in experiences with current professionals in the military and law enforcement, and more than 80 percent of the students engaged in such internships are extended immediate offers of employment. Coursework in Central Penn's homeland security major is multi-disciplinary, bringing together intelligence analysis, security fundamentals and emergency management to prepare students to work as homeland security professionals at a local, state or national level.
