A Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security Management is a new program offered by only a few schools. This degree trains students in all aspects of public safety, prevention measures and the psychology of human behavior. One institution offering this degree is Central Pennsylvania College in Summerdale. The program readies students to work in the varied fields under the DHS umbrella by providing training and education in three areas: security, emergency management and intelligence analysis. At the completion of coursework, students are placed in internships prior to graduating.
Another homeland security degree offered is the Master of Science in Homeland Security Management, designed to train those at a supervisor level, or those intending to be supervisors, how to deal with a variety of threats at their workplace or in the general community. Several schools have incorporated this degree into their graduate management programs, including the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in Adelphi. UMUC's program requires applicants to have a strong background in finance and statistics, and includes management courses on organizational theory and financial decision making for managers, and homeland specialization courses such as physical security, bio-security and bio-terrorism and energy infrastructure management.
Many schools offer a Bachelor of Arts in Homeland Security, incorporating training in border security, terrorism prevention and crisis management. General coursework includes criminal justice, Internet fraud, forensics, cyber-terrorism and identification of hazardous materials. Graduates holding this degree can apply for jobs as Border Patrol officers, hazardous material workers and intelligence agency operatives. American Military University in Charles Town, West Virginia, offers this degree and requires courses such as chemical and biological defense, border and coastal security, threat analysis and global politics of Islam.
A Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a specialization in Homeland Security and Crisis Management, gives students a foundation in criminal justice and criminal law and allows them to add courses that train them in various aspects of homeland security and crisis management. American InterContinental University, with locations in Atlanta, Houston and South Florida, offers this degree as part of its criminal justice program. Graduating students will gain risk analysis and strategic communication skills, demonstrate a foundation in laws, national security and public policy, and apply lessons on terrorism, counter-terrorism and natural disaster training. Core criminal justice classes include criminal law, criminal justice systems and constitutional law.
