Security Engineering Degrees

Professionals in the security engineering field brainstorm, produce and maintain equipment to keep computers and applications safe.     • Students just beginning their careers in security engineering may be interested in DePaul University's College of Computing and Digital Media's bachelor's degree in information assurance and security engineering. The four-year program includes general education required courses, plus topics such as codes and ciphers, applied networks and security, network protocols, technical writing, fundamentals of network security, introduction to software engineering, information systems security engineering and computer forensic response.

      Program enrollees must maintain a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 with no grades below a "C-" in their security engineering classes. Applicants must submit high school transcripts and proof of immunizations for tetanus, mumps, rubella, measles and diphtheria.

    Southern Methodist University

    • Earn a master's degree in security engineering from Southern Methodist University. The program, which may be completed in a year, includes courses in computer system security, operating systems and systems software, logistics systems engineering, cryptography and data security, software security, fault tolerant computing and data mining. While on campus, students may join computer groups such as the Association for Computing Machinery and Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international computing and information systems honor society.

      Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in engineering or quantitative science with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, plus a year of college-level calculus and software/networking development and maintenance.

    Pellissippi State Technical Community College

    • Enroll in the Pellissippi State Technical Community College associate's degree program in security engineering. The two-year program offers classes in investigation techniques, introduction to security administration and technology, security systems, security management, installation practices, security intelligence operations, legal aspects of security administration, plus an internship during the second year where students gain real-world work experience.

      Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, plus immunizations against hepatitis B, measles, mumps and rubella. Students under the age of 21 must provide ACT or SAT scores.
