Physical Therapist Assistant Education Courses in Alabama

Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) provide a vital element in the physical therapy plan of care. Assistants execute the exercises and programs outlined by the physical therapist. These professionals are licensed and skilled in the aspects of therapy but work under the direction of a licensed physical therapist. Schools throughout the state of Alabama offer PTA programs.
  1. Bishop State Community College

    • Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama, offers an Associate in Applied Science for PTAs. Course work covers, but is not exclusive to, pain relief, exercise, heat and cold therapies, ultrasound massage and gait (walking) training. Students receive class time and clinical experience in settings such as public schools, rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Admission criteria is based upon 25 volunteer hours in two different clinic areas, evaluations of the volunteer hours, math and science course GPAs and required course GPAs. Requirements are weighted on a points system with the maximum possible points being 17. A selection committee reviews all applicants and notifies student via mail if accepted. Interested students should mail admission packets to the college at the Baker-Central Campus.

    Wallace Community College

    • Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama, offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree for the physical therapist assistant program. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy and graduates are able to sit in any state for licensure. Completion of general classes, as well as PTA courses over five semesters, make up the two years required for graduation. Students in this program receive clinical training in addition to class time. Requirements for admission are at least 40 hours of observed work in two physical therapy settings, 20 hours in a long-term facility, 20 hours in an outpatient setting along with all required prerequisites classes. New programs begin each fall and the application deadline is in June of that year. Students should submit application packets to the PTA office.

    South University

    • South University offers a physical therapist assistant program that awards an Associates of Science degree. Students learn physical therapy techniques and assist actual physical therapists throughout the course of study. Students receive four quarters of laboratory and lecture and two quarters of hands-on clinical work. Upon completion of the courses, students will be able to sit for state licensure. Admission requirements are an ACT of 19 or a SAT of 900 and a high school diploma or equivalent. Admission packets should be submitted to the PTA department.
