Andrews University offers several continuing education courses for physical therapists. The University of Maryland offers a continuing education program that consists of six courses for physical therapists. Each course lasts for three days and may be taken individually or as part of a certificate program. The University of Indianapolis offers several course options for physical therapists to continue their studies. Most of the courses are offered in a weekend format; those that are not will be announced by the school. Sports physical therapy prepares the student to anticipate and render treatment, rehabilitation and prevention to athletes. Another course option is assistive technology. This course focuses on the in-depth use of modalities for patients with physical disabilities that include assistive devices, adaptive toys, custom wheelchair modifications and seating systems.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has a continuing education course for practicing physical therapists entitled Advances in Rehabilitation Sciences. This course is worth three credit hours and runs from August to December. Students focus on the basic understanding of functional recovery as well as treatment, assessment and outcome measurements. Non-pharmacological pain management and cardiopulmonary and orthopedic rehabilitation knowledge advances are also highlighted in this course.
