Physical Therapy Programs in Texas

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for physical therapists are expected to rise by 30 percent, making it a promising career field. Physical therapists help their patients recover from injury and deal with physical disabilities through therapeutic exercise. A career as a physical therapist requires a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, which can be entered into straight out of a bachelor's program. Several schools in Texas offer degree programs in physical therapy.
  1. Texas State University

    • The Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University has a three-year, or nine-semester, program. Each year 40 students are admitted into the full-time Doctor of Physical Therapy program, which includes curriculum based in the classroom and clinical internships. Course topics include clinical decision making, functional neuroanatomy and research in physical therapy. To qualify for admission, students must prove completion of a number of prerequisite courses, which include general chemistry and introduction to psychology. The university has an on-site physical therapy clinic where all students complete a clinical assignment.

    The University of Texas at El Paso

    • The University of Texas at El Paso offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy that can be completed in eight semesters. Students complete more than 30 weeks of clinical practice as a part of the program; the clinical hours are spread out over the last four semesters and completed concurrently with class work. Academic work includes classes in gross anatomy, pediatrics and Spanish medical terminology. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and at least 50 hours of documented work on a volunteer or paid basis under the supervision of a physical therapist.

    Texas Woman's University

    • The Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Texas Women's University is offered at the school's Dallas and Houston campuses. The program is 33 months long and includes fall, spring and summer semesters. A total of 32 weeks of full-time clinical experience are completed throughout the program, beginning in the first semester of study. Students will also complete academic work that includes classes in medical kinesiology, cardiopulminary physical therapy and gross human anatomy. Applicants should have completed prerequisites that include two semesters of chemistry and one semester of general physiology.
