There are five levels of qualification in security and protective services: certificate, which takes six months to a year; associate's, two years; bachelor's, four years; master's and PhD. Students generally can study at a college, or take an online course.
Courses begin with the design and functions of different lock and lock terminology. Students will gain essential skills in lock picking, key identification and cutting, installation of cylindrical and mortise lock sets, and automotive locks. The practical aspects will cover diagnosis and problem solving, as well as the toolkit of a locksmith. Business administration is also covered for those wanting to be self-employed.
Once they have mastered the basics, students learn to use drills, plug holders, key-extractors, screwdrivers, shims and related tools. Students learn different locks and lock picking techniques used on different premises. Students also learn how to analyze alarms and security systems. Longer courses also include emergency locksmithing tactics and advanced lockpicking techniques. Students work with electronic locks found on vaults, safes and related security devices. Programs also provide students with an understanding of home and business security concepts, allowing them to determine a client's potential security risks.
Professional locksmiths can expect to earn on average $18 an hour, as of 2010, and find employment either as a self-employed locksmith, or in a larger company. Other positions include security company locksmith, commercial locksmith, automotive locksmith, and safe and vault technician.
Licenses are acquired through the state licensing board, many of which using the licensing exam set by the Associated Locksmiths of America. Professionals are also encouraged to become certified locksmiths with the association, giving them access to further training and specialization.
