Phlebotomist Degrees

Phlebotomists are trained in venipuncture, which is a specialized technique of drawing blood from patients for donation or blood analysis; they work in clinics, hospitals or at doctor’s offices. Degree programs in phlebotomy are provided at universities and vocational colleges nationwide at the associate level. Prospective students should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Most schools offer degrees in phlebotomy alongside other health care fields such as laboratory science, medical assisting and allied health.

    • The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and offers an online bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, which includes extensive training in phlebotomy. Prospective students must have an associate degree in clinical laboratory technology or equivalent and a minimum grade-point average of 2.5. Students complete the theoretical portion of their training online and satisfy the their clinical training at a local health care facility. Students complete 10 credits per quarter and earn a bachelor's degree within two years. After successful completion of the program, graduates will become eligible to take the national certification examination. Course highlights include clinical microbiology, laboratory operations, clinical parasitiology and immunology.

    Independence University

    • Independence University provides associate, bachelor's and graduate degree courses in fields such as nursing, business, respiratory care and health management services. The associate degree training in allied health prepares students for entry-level careers in patient care services, including phlebotomy. The program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in health and human service fields. The degree is especially useful for professionals who already work in health care-related fields such as medical assisting, medical technician and occupational therapy.

    Keiser University

    • Based in Daytona Beach, Florida, Keiser University provides degree programs online and in traditional classrooms. Prospective students can enroll in a variety of fields such as business, biotechnology, culinary arts and education. The Associate of Science degree in medical assisting prepares students for entry-level careers in health services. Students receive training in medical assisting duties, which includes performing urinalysis, giving injections, phlebotomy, and performing minor surgical procedures. The training also readies students to work in administrative settings and perform duties such as billing, and maintaining patient records.

      In order to successfully complete their coursework, students are required to earn at least 60.5 credit hours. Course highlights include radiography, laboratory procedures, anatomy and physiology and medical terminology. In addition to completing their classroom training, students also fulfill the practical portion of their training by taking part in externships.
