How to Ensure the Proper Use of a Lab Microscope

Ensuring the proper use and care of laboratory microscopes is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. Microscopes are not cheap, and they are an essential tool used in the study of most areas of science. Improper use, care and storage can result in damage, and that damage may result in a microscope that does not function properly. With laboratory microscopes being exposed to so many different potential users during the course of a day, each user should accept his role of careful and proper care of it. Proper instruction and standards must be in place to assure each user does so.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach the parts of the microscope and how to properly use, handle and take care of them. Take the class through practice use before allowing them to use the microscopes alone. Establish a strict policy to govern the use of all laboratory microscopes. Read it aloud to all classes and to any others who will use them.

    • 2

Post the policy prominently at the microscope use areas. Enforce the policy. Attach a punishment for violators who are caught. Make the punishment sufficiently harsh to deter flagrant abusers.

    • 3

Situate the microscope work stations in plain view, so the person working with them can clearly be seen and monitored without obstruction. Make sure the work surface is large, clear of vision/monitoring interference and uncluttered.

    • 4
Store the microscopes in an area that can be continually monitored.

Store the microscopes in cabinets. Restrict access. Keep the microscopes stored behind lock and key, and keep the key in your pocket.

    • 5

Set up a check-out system for microscope use. Establish time frames for use and checking the microscope back in to you, and not anyone else. Make sure the person who is checking out the microscope is aware that the proper use and safety of the instrument is his responsibility.

    • 6

Remove their name as the last person having used the microscope only when you have personally examined it and found it in the same condition it was in when it was checked out. Number the microscopes and match that number with its usual place of storage to keep track of them. For example, Number 3 microscope is stored in Number 3 cabinet on Number 3 shelf.

    • 7

Do not allow the microscopes to leave the room/department to which they are assigned. Perform all cleaning and maintenance yourself. Do not assign this task to anyone else. Set up a schedule for doing this regularly, and keep a maintenance log. Reset the compound microscopes to their lowest settings after each use and before storing them.

    • 8

Check the bulbs and remove all slides from the stage/slide platform. Clean the body and lenses. Store the microscope cord under the microscope cover. Never wrap the cord around the body of the microscope. Cover and store the microscopes with their fronts to the back of the storage cabinet.
