HIV Nurse Practitioner Programs

Several colleges offer a Master of Science in Nursing program with a focus on HIV/AIDS. The HIV/AIDS subspecialty is generally available to students who choose an Adult Nurse specialty and are then able to choose the HIV/AIDS subspecialty. Programs generally require 24 to 28 months of full-time study.
  1. Vanderbilt University

    • The School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University offers a Master of Science in Acute Care Nursing that allows students to choose HIV/AIDS as a subspecialty. The program requires on-campus coursework, which may include weekend study, online conferencing and a combination of professor-student contact. The program requires three semesters of continuous full-time study, with the first semester occurring in the fall. If the student is from a non-nursing background, the duration of the program is extended to six semesters of continuous full-time study. Part-time options are available, which expand the course of study over three years. The curriculum consists of advanced practice nursing fundamentals, health assessment, physiologic and pathophsyiologic foundations, pharmaceutics, collaborative management care and research methods. Students are free to take HIV/AIDS nursing electives.

      The total cost of attendance for the 2010 to 2011 academic year for a student enrolled in a full-time, three-semester program is $73,000. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

    University of California - San Francisco

    • The School of Nursing at the University of California - San Francisco offers a Master of Science in Adult Nursing with a subspecialty in HIV/AIDS. The program is divided among six quarters of full-time study. The curriculum consists of study in policy theory, nursing management, health assessment, complimentary healing, adult nurse practicum, pharmacology, research methods, advanced practice methods and clinical conferences.

      The total cost of attendance for the 2010 to 2011 academic year is $17,323 for California residents and $29,568 for non-residents. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. The deadline for admission application is the beginning of February prior to the fall semester of matriculation.

    Hunter College

    • The School of Nursing at Hunter College offers a Master of Science in Nursing that allows students to specialize in HIV/AIDS nursing. The main program of study is in adult nursing with coursework focusing on theoretical foundations of nursing, pathophysiology, health assessment, primary care nursing and urban health care systems. After completing the core coursework the adult nursing student is able to embark upon elective coursework in the field of HIV/AIDS nursing.

      Tuition for the 2010 to 2011 academic year is $310 per credit or a maximum of $3,600 per academic semester for New York state residents. Tuition for non-residents is $575 per credit. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
