Private Scholarships for Minority Students in California

According to the California Department of Education, in the 2004-2005 school year 60 percent of public high school graduates in California were minorities. Many of these students will choose to attend college. College costs in 2009-2010 were $26,272 for private and $7,090 for public colleges and universities, not including room, board or other educational expenses. Fortunately, there is over $168 billion available in financial aid, including scholarships aimed for minorities in California.
  1. Fisher Broadcasting Scholarships for Minorities

    • The Fisher Scholarships for Minorities are designed for minority students who are pursuing a degree in broadcasting. The scholarships are open to those attending any type of post-secondary education living in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and California. It requires students be a sophomore or above, be enrolled in a broadcast-oriented curriculum, be of nonwhite origin, have a 2.5 grade point average or above, and have proof of citizenship.

    The Dr. Anita Young Boswell Scholarship

    • The Dr. Anita Young Boswell Scholarship was created by the National Hook-up of Black Women, Inc. and is designed for African American female students. It grants a minimum of $1,000 per scholarship. It requires students to be African American females enrolled in a post-secondary education. More requirements are released every year in November along with the the application.

    Paumanauke Native American Indian Scholarship

    • The Paumanauke Native American Indian Scholarship was the dream of Nat Sales and has been continued by the Paumanauke Pow-Wow and Native American Living Arts Festival. It requires students be a tribally enrolled Native American Indian, attending an accredited post-secondary school full time. Six $500 scholarships and one $750 scholarship are given out every year.
