Scholarships for Minority Girls

For most of the 200-plus years that the United States has existed as a nation, both women and people of minority racial and ethnic status have been underrepresented at American institutions of higher learning. Today, there are a number of scholarships available to women of ethnic or racial minority status that aim to reverse this trend and promote diversity in U.S. colleges and universities.
  1. AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships

    • The American Association of University Women offers fellowships to female graduate students under the Selected Professions Fellowship Program. These awards are designed to help female students attain advanced degrees in selected fields in which women have traditionally been underrepresented. Furthermore, the AAUW is committed to providing scholarships and fellowships to students who belong to ethnic and racial minorities. According to the AAUW website, "fellowships for business administration, law, and medicine have been available only to women of color since 1991." The amount of awards vary, with an average of about 30 fellowships awarded annually. Interested students should visit the AAUW website for more information.
