Postgraduate Scholarships for Minorities

According to a 2007 report by the Council of Graduate Schools, minority representation in graduate enrollment increased from 26% to 28% between 1996 and 2006. Groups included in the study were Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics, as well as Asian and Pacific Islander students who represent the bulk of minority graduate students. Enrollment by Hispanic graduate students increased the most, at an average of 9% annually. Minority students interested in pursuing graduate degrees have a number of scholarships and fellowships available to assist them with graduate school expenses.
  1. The American Anthropological Association

    • The AAA offers the AAA Minority Dissertation Fellowship, worth $10,000, to doctoral students in the field who are in the process of writing their dissertation and whose dissertation proposals already have been approved by their respective committees. Interested parties must hold membership in the Association at least one month prior to application. The award targets members of "an historically underrepresented ethnic group," such as African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians or Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, Chicanos, and Pacific Islanders. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to successfully complete their writing and financial need for the fellowship in order to qualify.

    The National GEM Consortium

    • The Consortium offers minority fellowships to encourage the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in the fields of engineering and science. They offer three fellowship programs: the Master of Science Engineering Fellowship Program, the Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship Program and the Ph.D. Science Fellowship Program. Students must be enrolled in or admitted to a GEM member university in order to qualify. The terms vary depending on the fellowship, but generally the programs fund stipends, tuition and fees and a summer internship with a GEM employer member.

    The American Psychological Association

    • The Association's Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) has supported over 1,400 researchers and trainees in psychology and neuroscience since its inception in 1974. The program targets doctoral level ethnic minority students pursuing research and further study in mental health and substance abuse, with the understanding that these students' unique backgrounds will allow them to make important contributions to understanding the mental health needs of minority communities and individuals.

National Asian Pacific American Bar Association

    • The NAPABA provides scholarships each year through its NAPABA Law Foundation (NLF) to law students who "demonstrate a commitment to serve or contribute to the Asian Pacific American community as future leaders." Scholarships include the Lim, Ruger & Kim Scholarship, the Chris Nakamura Scholarship, the UPS/NLF Gold Mountain Scholarship, and the Anheuser-Busch/NLF Scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school in order to qualify.
