Scholarships for Minorities in Science

Public and private institutions have established a series of scholarships to encourage minority students to pursue degrees in science. Scholarships are both need-based and merit-based, and the amount of the awards range from small grants to full funding for all four years of college.
  1. Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship

    • Created in 1987 to increase minority participation and innovation in the fields of science and technology, the Xerox scholarship awards each qualified student between $1,000 and $10,000 annually. Application for the award requires completion of one form; no other documents are required. Eligible students must have a 3.0 GPA or better, demonstrated financial need and enrollment in a science or engineering field. The deadline for application materials is September 30, and winners are announced by the end of December.

    The Gates Millennium Scholars

    • Established in 1999 and funded by a $1 billion grant, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program awards scholarships to minority students with significant financial need. The GMS award provides support to cover a student's unmet financial needs, enabling them to complete their undergraduate education. Throughout their collegiate careers, the GMS provides scholars with leadership development programs, mentoring services and an online resource center that provides internship, fellowship, scholarship, graduate and post-graduate opportunities. Eligible students must have a 3.3 GPA or better (or a GED); be a first-time, full-time, degree-seeking student; demonstrated leadership abilities; meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; and complete all required forms.

    Chemical Science Scholarship

    • Founded in 1995 by the American Chemistry Society (ACS) to increase minority participation in chemistry and chemistry-related fields, the Chemical Science Scholarship awards up to $5,000 annually to qualified minority students with demonstrated financial need. Once awarded, ACS provides mentors to students to ensure their academic success and counselors when choosing their careers. Eligible students must have a 3.0 GPA or better; they must major in chemistry or a chemically-related science. Students who accept this award agree to pursue careers in chemistry or chemistry-related fields after graduation. Pre-med and pharmacy majors are not eligible for this scholarship.
