Scholarships for History Essays

Many college scholarships are available that are geared toward students who excel at composing essays about history. History essay scholarships come in a number of different forms and many scholarships are available to students across grade levels, including for high-school students. Both private and public organizations offer history essay scholarships.
  1. USIP National Peace Essay Contest

    • The United States Institute of Peace sponsors an annual National Peace Essay Contest for high-school students. Each year, contestants must compose an essay about a specific topic dealing with history and U.S. foreign relations. Fifty essayists receive college scholarships of $1,000, one in each U.S. state. In addition, three national scholarships are awarded in amounts of $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000. Winners are also invited to Washington, D.C., to take part in a summer seminar. All students are eligible to enter, even students who are home schooled. Interested students should visit the USIP website for more information.

    Phi Alpha Theta Essay Scholarships

    • Phi Alpha Theta fraternity offers several scholarships to undergraduate students in history based on essays penned on a number of specific subjects. The Western Front Association Undergraduate Essay Prize, for instance, provides scholarship funds of $1,000 for a winning essay about any aspect of American involvement in World War I. Another is the Phi Alpha Theta/World History Association Paper Prize in World History, which awards scholarship money of $400 to a winning essay about any topic in world history.     Texas History Essay Scholarship

    • The Sons of the Republic of Texas sponsor an annual essay contest for high-school seniors in the United States. The Texas History Essay Scholarship is awarded every year to three high-school seniors in amounts of $1,000, $2,000, and $3,000. According to the Sons of the Republic of Texas website, eligible essays will "reflect an awareness of Texas history and explore its relevance to the building of Texas." The annual deadline for contest entry is January 31. Interested students should visit the SRT website for contest rules and to download an application.
