American History Scholarships

Costs of higher education are constantly on the rise. Fortunately, there are a number of colleges, universities and institutes around the country that offer scholarship monies to deserving students who are majoring in American history. It is through these American history scholarships that students with the ability but perhaps not the means can break through some of the cost barriers of their education while studying in first-rate programs.
  1. George S. Ellsworth American History Scholarship

    • The George S. Ellsworth American History Scholarship is offered at Utah State University to an outstanding junior who will be studying American History during his or her senior year. The scholarship was named in memory of Professor George Ellsworth, a well-respected faculty member in the school's American History department who passed away. The award is based on two semesters of tuition, with applications due February 1st and decisions announced in March or April.

    Richard Gilder American History Scholarship

    • The Richard Gilder American History Scholarship was established by the Rachor Family Foundation in honor of Richard Gilder, a Wall Street stockbroker who is also a Trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and co-founder of the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History. This scholarship is designed for University of Michigan-Flint students who have completed 60 credit hours and have at least a 3.4 GPA. Preference is given to students who not only have an academic emphasis on American History, but who are actively pursuing a career in the field.

    Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship

    • The Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship can be applied to any accredited four-year university with a legitimate American History program. Applicants must be female, entering college as a freshman, and be a U.S. citizen. They also must be supported by a local DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) chapter. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,000, and the deadline for applications is typically mid-February.

    General Henry Dearborn History Scholarship

    • The Illinois chapter of DAR offers the General Henry Dearborn History Scholarship to a student who is entering college as a freshman and plans to study American History at an accredited, four-year university within the state of Illinois. In order to be eligible, the student must have completed at least their first semester as a high school senior and must be sponsored by a local DAR chapter. There is no financial need component to the scholarship.

    Robert E. Miller and Sons American History Scholarship Fund

    • Haverford College in Pennsylvania offers the Robert E. Miller and Sons American History Scholarship Fund, which honors six members of the Miller family who were not only alumni, but who also fought in all branches of the American Armed Forces during World War II. The fund is meant to promote the study, research, education and appreciation of American History while simultaneously preserving its traditions. Award amounts vary.
