The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to children of Armed Services and National Guard members who were killed in action on or after Sept. 11, 2001. Scholarships are available to high school seniors and graduates who are enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college or university. The amount of the scholarship varies based on the availability of funds.

American Legion Baseball Scholarships are available to high school baseball players who are members of an American Legion affiliated team. Recipients must be high school seniors or recent graduates who plan to attend a four-year college. Players must be nominated to be considered and are required to provide letters of recommendation from the team manager or Legion coach, the Legion post commander, and a community leader, such as a minister or Scout leader. Applications must be sent to the Department headquarters of the applicant's state, not the national office.

The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is designated for the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of wartime veterans, with preference given to direct descendants of Korean War veterans. Applicants must be high school juniors who complete an American Legion Boys or Girls State program. The program awards a limited number of $20,000 scholarships and numerous $1,000 scholarships. Applications go to the student's boys or girls state program official.

The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest is a speech competition open to all high school students under the age of 20. Participants are required to give an eight- to ten-minute speech on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution. Competition begins at the local post level then moves on to state and national competitions. The winner of the national competition receives $18,000 in scholarship money with additional scholarship funds available to second- and third-place winners as well as those who place into the national competition.

The American Legion awards $10,000 to the student named Eagle Scout of the Year as well as $2,500 scholarships to the runners-up. Applicants must have previously received the Eagle Scout Award and be nominated to be considered for the scholarship.
